You might be surprised by what brings people into the acupuncture clinic. When you hear the word acupuncture , what comes to mind? Back pain? A sore shoulder? Maybe stress? Those are certainly common reasons people walk through our doors. But after practicing acupuncture for many years, one of the things I still enjoy is watching someone's expression when I tell them: “Yes, we treat that too.” Chinese medicine looks at the body differently than conventional Western medicine. Instead of looking only at the symptom that's bothering you, we look for patterns, how you sleep, your digestion, stress levels, energy, pain, circulation, temperature, and other seemingly unrelated clues. That means people sometimes end up in our acupuncture rooms for reasons they never expected. Here are seven of them. 1. Jaw Tension & TMJ Problems Do you catch yourself clenching your teeth while working? Wake up with a tight jaw? Have headaches that seem to start around your temples or face? Jaw tension can involve the muscles surrounding the jaw, face, neck and shoulders, and stress can make clenching worse. Acupuncture is sometimes incorporated into care for temporomandibular disorders (TMD/TMJ) and associated muscle tension and pain. And here's something patients don't always realize: we don't necessarily have to needle directly into the painful area. Acupuncturists frequently combine local points with points elsewhere on the body. If you're a nighttime clencher or your jaw seems permanently attached to your stress level, it's worth talking with us about. 2. Seasonal Allergies This is one that surprises a lot of people. Sneezing. Itchy eyes. Runny nose. Congestion. Sinus pressure. Western medicine generally approaches allergic rhinitis by reducing the allergic response or controlling symptoms with medications such as antihistamines and nasal corticosteroids. Chinese medicine asks additional questions. Is your nose running or completely blocked? Is the discharge clear or thick? Are your eyes red and itchy? Do you feel exhausted when your allergies flare? Do symptoms seem worse with certain weather? Those differences can point an acupuncturist toward different Chinese medicine patterns—even though every patient has the same Western diagnosis of “allergies.” Acupuncture may be used as a complementary approach for people with allergic rhinitis, particularly those looking for additional ways to manage symptoms. 3. Plantar Heel Pain That first step out of bed in the morning... Ouch. Heel and plantar fascia pain can be stubborn, particularly when you spend a lot of time standing, walking or running. Acupuncture may be used as part of a broader treatment strategy to address pain and surrounding muscle tension. We may look beyond the bottom of the foot, too. Calf tension, ankle mobility and the way the entire lower leg is functioning can all matter. In other words, the place you feel pain isn't always the only place we look. 4. Trouble Sleeping This is an interesting one because sometimes sleep isn't even why someone originally comes in. They may be receiving acupuncture for their shoulder or back and mention a few visits later: “By the way...I've been sleeping really well.” Sleep problems have many possible causes, so persistent insomnia deserves appropriate evaluation. But acupuncture is also used as a complementary therapy for sleep difficulties. Chinese medicine goes even further by asking what kind of sleep problem you're having. Can't fall asleep? Fall asleep easily but wake at 2 a.m.? Mind won't shut off? Wake repeatedly? Sleep all night but still feel exhausted? Those distinctions matter when we put together a treatment. 5. Headaches & Migraines This one isn't exactly weird—but many people are surprised by how commonly we treat it. Especially people who have simply learned to live with headaches. Maybe you keep medication on your desk. Maybe you know exactly which day of a stressful week your headache is likely to appear. Maybe neck tension starts building until eventually... Here it comes. Acupuncture has been studied extensively for certain types of headaches, including tension-type headaches and migraine prevention. We also look at the bigger picture: neck and shoulder tension, stress, sleep, menstrual cycles, digestion and other factors that may accompany someone's headache pattern. If headaches have become something you simply expect, it may be worth exploring another approach. 6. Nausea This is probably one of acupuncture's more interesting applications. One particular acupuncture point on the inner wrist— Pericardium 6 (PC-6) —has been extensively studied for nausea and vomiting, including postoperative nausea. It's also the location commonly stimulated by some acupressure wristbands. In the clinic, however, we aren't limited to one point. We look at what may be contributing to the nausea and select treatment based on the individual. And yes—this is one of those situations where treating your wrist can potentially influence something happening in your stomach. Pretty interesting. 7. Stress That Has Started Showing Up in Your Body Maybe you wouldn't describe yourself as particularly “stressed.” But your shoulders are permanently up around your ears. Your jaw is clenched. You're sleeping poorly. Your digestion gets weird during busy weeks. Your headaches are returning. And your body simply feels... on. Stress isn't imaginary. Your nervous system influences muscle tension, sleep, digestion, heart rate and many other physiological processes. Many patients find acupuncture deeply relaxing, and research has begun exploring its effects on stress-related symptoms and autonomic nervous-system regulation. Sometimes patients come in saying: “I didn't realize how tense I was until I finally relaxed.” That can be an important realization. Here's the Bigger Point The interesting thing about acupuncture isn't simply that it can be used for a long list of conditions. It's that we don't treat the list. We treat the person sitting in front of us. Two people can walk into our clinic with headaches and receive different acupuncture treatments because their headaches aren't behaving the same way. That's one of the things I love most about Chinese medicine. We ask questions. We look for patterns. And we try to understand what your body is telling us rather than simply chasing whichever symptom happens to be loudest that day. So...What Have You Been Living With? Maybe it's the headache you've gotten used to. The jaw that always feels tight. The heel that hurts every morning. The allergies you dread every spring. Or the sleep problem you've been saying you'll eventually figure out. You don't need to know whether acupuncture can help before you come talk with us. That's our job. Tell us what's going on. We'll listen, ask questions, and let you know whether acupuncture is an appropriate option, and if we think something needs evaluation by another healthcare provider, we'll tell you that too. Sometimes the first step isn't committing to a treatment plan. It's simply asking: “Could acupuncture help with this?” Schedule an acupuncture appointment and let's find out.
