Acupressure Spotlight: ST 36 – Your Go-To Point for Energy, Immunity, and Digestion

One of the most powerful and widely used acupressure points in Traditional Chinese Medicine is ST 36, also known as Zusanli, meaning “Leg Three Miles.” 

​​Why Is ST 36 Called the “Leg Three Miles” Point?

The name Zusanli translates to “Leg Three Miles,” and it comes from an old legend in Chinese medicine. The story goes that ancient travelers or soldiers, when exhausted and unable to go on, would press or needle this point to revive their strength. After stimulating it, they could walk another three miles—hence the name.

In modern times, this still rings true. ST 36 is famous for restoring energy, reducing fatigue, and helping the body recover. It’s often used to boost stamina, nourish the body’s Qi and Blood, and support overall vitality. Whether you’re hitting a mid-afternoon slump or bouncing back from illness, ST 36 is like nature’s little energy shot—no caffeine required.

Where Is It?

ST 36 is located on the lower leg. To find it, place four fingers below the bottom edge of your kneecap, and then move one finger-width to the outside of your shinbone. You’ll find a tender spot in the muscle—gently press there. That’s ST 36!

What Does It Do?

ST 36 is known for being a powerhouse. It supports:

  • Digestive health (bloating, gas, sluggish digestion, poor appetite)
  • Immune function (great during cold & flu season)
  • Energy and stamina (especially if you’re feeling run down or depleted)
  • Mental clarity and stress resilience
  • Pain relief in the stomach area or legs

It’s also one of the best points to support general wellness and recovery—especially helpful post-illness or during times of high stress.

When to Use It

  • Feeling fatigued or worn out
  • Experiencing digestive upset or nausea
  • Trying to boost your immune system
  • Prepping for, or recovering from travel or surgery
  • Supporting long-term wellness or chronic conditions

To activate it, press gently (but firmly) with your thumb or knuckle for 30 seconds to 2 minutes, while taking slow, deep breaths. You can do this once or twice a day.

When Not to Use It

ST 36 is generally very safe. However, it should be avoided in pregnancy after the first trimester unless under the care of a licensed practitioner, as it is known to be strongly moving and stimulating. Also, avoid over-stimulating it in people who are very weak, frail, or recovering from a severe illness unless directed by a professional.
